KILIMANJARO day 3

KILIMANJARO CLIMB

View from the tent.  One of the Kikelewa caves can be seen to the left, with Kibo - Kilimanjaro's highest volcano and our ultimate destination - dominating the background.
Kikelewa Camp and Mawenzi in perfect weather.  The small hut on the right is the toilet block.  At this altitude, the short walk up to it left us breathless but it wasn't the kind of place where you could enjoy sucking in deep lung-fulls of air; if I close my eyes I can still smell it.

Bozzy tucks into his breakfast.  We were all nervous at this point, as we faced a steep climb to take us up to Mawenzi Tarn at 4330 metres and wondered whether we'd be able to cope with the climb, the altitude, or the porridge.

Cobra, Etsuo and Boz, taking a break.

Kibo wearing its customary midday cloud.  The Rebmann Glacier, which we'll pass close by on summit night, peeps from the clouds to the far left.

Plodding onwards, worrying that the bushes are getting to small to nip behind .

Assistant Guide Cobra takes a breather as the porters struggle upwards on their way to set up camp.

The grim looking campsite at Mawenzi Tarn, a popular acclimatisation stop for climbers attempting Kilimanjaro.
Our afternoon acclimatisation walk from here was curtailed early on by the guides, who decided we all looked too groggy to continue, sending us back to the tents to rest.

Thankyou to Team Kilimanjaro , the very friendly, knowledgeable and efficient company that arranged our trek.  They have the best guides on the mountain.
